( Q ) Who is eligible for a free library card?

( A ) Anyone age 5 and older who lives, works, and/or goes to school in Lamar County may get a library card that provides full access to all library services. Patrons living outside of the Lamar County service area are eligible for a library card at no additional cost. Children 14 and under must have a parent or legal guardian present when signing up for a library card. Young adults age 15 and older may get a limited-use library card independently, but a parent or guardian must come in to the library to authorize changing the library card to full access. Otherwise the limited-use card allows for five checkouts only.

( Q ) Can I get a card if I don't live in Lamar County?

( A ) Patrons living outside of the Lamar County service area are eligible for a library card at no additional cost. To sign up for a free library card, you must visit any Lamar County Library System location and provide one form of identification for each applicant. You may join the Lamar County Library System for free even if you do not reside in Lamar County.

If you wish to get an Internet-Use Only library card, you only need identification.

Any person may use materials in-house. To check out materials (or to carry materials out of the library), patrons must obtain a library card.

Accepted forms of identification include: social security card, birth certificate, driver’s license, military ID, school or college ID, school report card or schedule, shot record, health insurance card, state issued ID, selective service card.


( Q ) How old does my child need to be to get his/her own card?

( A ) Children are eligible for their own regular library card when they reach the age of 5 years. All applicants age 14 and under must have a parent or legal guardian read and sign the application. Parent must be present. By reading and signing the child’s application, the parent or guardian accepts financial responsibility for all items borrowed on the child’s card.

(B)Youth 15-17 may obtain a Teen Limited Access card without the signature of a parent or legal guardian. Checkout is limited to 5 items.

( Q ) What if I lose my library card?

( A ) You are responsible for immediately reporting a lost or stolen card. To get a new card, bring $1 and a valid photo ID to one of our four locations.

( Q ) Do I need a library card for each library in Lamar County?

( A ) Your card may be used at any of our four library branches: Purvis, Sumrall, Lumberton and Oak Grove. You may also return library materials to any of these four branches.
